WV finished 10th out of all 29 bands

WV finished 10th out of all 29 bands out performing many larger schools, and placed 1st in the 2A division, and received all but one of the 2A "caption awards". WV students are very excited! Great job band and instructors!

During the coming week, watch this space for:
* Videos of all 12 "finalist" bands in the Puget Sound Festival of Bands competition. These will be posted later in the week. Welcome visitors from across the state - a video of the top 12 bands plus Sultan High School will be posted here later. Check back to watch your students here, online.

There were many amazing performances. Many of the top bands perform Drum and Bugle Corps style shows that are highly entertaining.

Eastern Washington schools won half of all the top 12 awards. Mead HS placed 1st overall in the competition - great job Mead!

And yes, most of the band really was blowing bubbles!

The following is a 3 minute video of the award - after award ... - to West Vally High School. Sorry about the video quality - just turn up the volume really loud since that is all you really need to enjoy the celebration!

Preliminary Competition Video - Everett

The WVHS Marching Band (2A) performs in preliminary competition at the Puget Sound Festival of Marching Bands. Watch for the new additions - and the stunning ending to this performance. About 10% of the audience stood up and gave a standing ovation - and they were not the unbiased WV parents either!

Someone who knows what he is talking about said that he thought WV was the best of the 2A bands he saw perform. We will learn more at Preliminary Awards at 1:45 pm - the Preliminary Awards are for the A and AA schools; more "big school bands" perform later in the afternoon. A total of 29 high school marching bands are participating in the competition.

The somewhat higher quality Veoh video will be available here in early afternoon. In the interim, you can watch the quick conversion video below.

Update from Yakima

From a sampling of completely unbiased and totally honest WV Band parents, your band did their best performance yet this Fall season, introducing many new show elements at this competition. The band received tremendous applause from the audience.

There was also excellent competition from Tumwater HS and Black Hills HS, and perhaps especially Tumwater.

A "quick" video will be provided soon, hopefully this afternoon, but no guarantee. A higher quality video will be updated either this evening or on Sunday.

Watch this space for updates with videos, still photos and scores later today.
(I am still sitting in the stands as I simultaneously encode video and update the web site and access the Internet through an open access point....)

Update on the equipment truck to Yakima

Background - the equipment truck started on the trip today but the engine was sputtering and not running properly. Students were directed to call their parents and see if any could assist in unloading the sick truck and reloading into a new van. You might have had a call on this so here is the outcome ...

What happened
- the sick van limped back to the Budget truck rental and 13 or 14 parents and family members unloaded most of the van. A new truck was backed up and all remaining items in the bad van were loaded directly into the back of the new truck. The unloaded equipment was all reloaded.

The new truck departed at about 4:45 pm on Friday, less than one hour after the unload/load sequence began. We think this might be a new Guinness world record :-)

Since the band was to stop in Ellensburg for dinner, the equipment truck will drive straight through and should get to Yakima so that there is only a short delay with getting their evening band rehearsal underway.

What a great team effort - way to go Eagles!

Budget believes that the previous renter of the truck mistakenly refueled with gasoline instead of diesel fuel. Diesel engines do not run smoothly on gasoline. Thank you to Budget @ Argonne and Montgomery for the quick truck replacement!

Parents - Have you seen the Yakima Trip Information form?

Your student brought it home. In theory.

If you have not seen one, it is yellow and looks something like this:

Click here to view Page 1

and

Click here to view Page 2

and print yourself a copy.

Here is the official Yakima Harvest Marching Band Festival web site..

The WVHS Yakima trip hand out, Page 2, says that All Day tickets are $7 but the official festival web site says all day tickets are $10 and the Finals tickets are $7.

Update: I expect that I will be driving to Yakima on Saturday morning and will try to update the web site remotely depending on availability of Internet access. Watch this site Saturday afternoon for updates, and if Internet access works, you'll see some photos and video.

Adult Chaperones needed for band trips

Adult chaperones are needed for future band trips including next weekend to Yakima, WA, two weeks later to Everett, WA and two weeks later to Auburn, WA.

Joining the band trip is a tremendous amount of fun - you don't want to miss a chance to have fun with a great group of students and other adult chaperones.

If you can help - or know other adults who can help - Call Kay Roderick at 924-0321 before Monday for the Yakima trip next weekend - or Call Kay after next week Monday (she is traveling this week). Please call!

WVHS Alumni Band!!!

WVHS has an alumni band that will be playing at the October 26th Homecoming Game at West Valley High School. 18 band alumni are signed up and we are looking for more. The group will meet at WVHS on Friday, October 26th at 4:30 pm. We also heard something about pizza being provided ...

If you are a band alumni and would like to have a lot of fun with old friends at the Homecoming Game, contact Mr. Jim Loucks at WVHS at 922-5488 as soon as possible!

If you see this note and know other band alumni, please email or call them and ask if they would like to participate at this fun event!

Friday, Oct 12th Halftime video

Online Videos by Veoh.com

There is a "glitch" near the end of the video due to testing a new type of video tape (obviously, it did not pass the test ...)

A High Definition HD/720p version is available for download - HDTV NOT required - plays on your computer. Download using the "Download" options here. Works great on cable and DSL modems. Veoh Player recommended but the MP4 file can be played in Quicktime, iTunes and many other programs. (More information on using HD downloads is here).

Note to Viewers
Beginning this week, we are experimenting with listing our valued sponsors in credits within each video. The halftime and the Cavalcade videos have been updated to credit our sponsors. The exact way this will be done is subject to change as the concept evolves and may look different on future videos.

How did they do?

Among the large sample of 3 totally unbiased WVHS band parents surveyed, your Band did a great job. The best ever seen for a 1st competition event in the fall. They showed a preciseness and crispness that is unusual for the first competition of the season. Great job band!

There is also some very good competition - we will learn how they did points-wise at the 5 pm preliminary awards ceremony.

Watch for text updates on the scores sometime after 5pm today.

VIDEO
A video of this morning's performance is in the final steps of being encoded and will appear online at this link once the transcoding process has completed. That can sometimes take an hour or so and its 12:24 pm as I write this. (A "play" button should appear on the video once it is ready to be played.)
