MARCHING BAND REHEARSAL CANCELED for JULY 7

MARCHING BAND REHEARSAL CANCELED for JULY 7
Due to the 4th of July weekend and the large number of students and families who will be out of town, the Marching Band Rehearsal for Monday, July 7, has been canceled. However, the rehearsal on Tuesday,July 8, will held from 6:00 - 9:00 PM.

The rehearsal will begin on the track with instruments ... please plan on being there for "stretches" at 5:45 PM. This includes ALL woodwinds, brass, battery, and color guard. Pit will meet inside. Finally, remember to wear proper shoes (flip flops will not be acceptable). We will be working on music, as well, so practice before next Tuesday. I will be working with all those students who are learning new instruments. Thanks ... see ya!
(Txt your friends to remind them!)

WVHS Marching Band Selected to Perform at the WSSDA Conference in Spokane in November

Great news ... the WVHS Marching Band will kick off the Annual Washington State School Directors Association State Conference (WSSDA) in November at the Spokane Convention Center. We'll be performing from 10-15 minutes for this major event. Should be fun!

The WSSDA includes nearly 1,500 school board members from the 295 public school districts in all of Washington State. West Valley's band auditioned for this opportunity (via a DVD of some previous performances) and has been selected to perform at this high visibility event.

More information will be posted here as it becomes available.

WVHS Band Hoopfest Volunteers Urgently Needed

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!
Each year, the WVHS Band works at Hoopfest (June 28th and 29th) to raise funds for our Fall Marching Band Show. These funds are necessary to hire Band Camp staff, build props, and purchase other items that contribute to our success. EVERY student benefits from these monies!

This has been THE main source of income for our show for the past several years ... we need all of you to sign-up and work at least one shift at Hoopfest. Call Kay today at 924-0321. Thank you.

Jim Loucks, Band Director

Welcome new Freshmen and Band Parents
Welcome new Freshmen members of the band and color guard. The band's web site is wvbands.org.

Your help and involvement in Band Boosters in any way you can is greatly appreciated. To learn more about Band Boosters, please visit this web page:
http://wvbands.blogspot.com/2004/06/about-west-valley-band-boosters.html

Students and parents - please add yourself to the WVHS Band Boosters email list by visiting wvbands.org and click on the link at the top of the page. All requests must be approved before adding and we only check the requests every week or so. This is a very low volume email announcements list with maybe a dozen or so emails during the past school year. (Parents and students already on the list in 2007-2008 are still on the list and do not need to re-add their email.)

New this year - a separate email distribution list is being set up for announcements and reminders directly to students from the band director. Students will learn more about this very soon!

2008 FALL MARCHING BAND SEASON IS OFF TO A GREAT START!!!

This past week our students have been working on the music for our 2008 Fall Marching Band Season ... what a great start! In my 16 years at WVHS, I have never had groups of students PRACTICING their music during lunch and even after school on an early-release day. Sometimes, I think we ALL need to get a life!

Our next rehearsal is MONDAY, JULY 7 and TUESDAY, JULY 8 (6:00 - 9:00 PM) in the WVHS Band Room. We will be working inside and outside so wear appropriate shoes (no sandals). The work we do now will make it so much easier once school begins in August. See you on the 7th and 8th!

Finally, if you did not pick up a CD recording of our music or a copy of your printed music, I will be at WVHS next week ... email me to let me know. Also, if you know anyone who's thinking about being a part of our great Band, they need to contact me immediately. Drill will be written very shortly!

Hey, guys, thanks for a very memorable 2007-2008 year! I really appreciate your hard work and commitment to a very high level of excellence. Let's keep raising the bar! (Practice your music now) Have a great summer.

Love ya!

All Centennial Middle School 8th grade Band students AND ANY OTHER STUDENTS (in-district or transfer students) who are enrolling next fall in the award-winning West Valley High School "Eagle" Marching Band need to attend three special "O" Hour rehearsals next week to begin learning our show music.

Here's the schedule:

Tuesday, June 10: 6:50 - 7:45 AM (WVHS Band Room) - CMS Jazz Band will not be at WVHS
Wednesday, June 11: 6:50 - 7:45 AM (WVHS Band Room)

All CMS students need to provide their own transportation to WVHS and Bus #5 will take all of you back to CMS at the end of each rehearsal. In addition to receiving copies of the music, a summer schedule will be passed out and a CD recording of the music may also be available.

Finally, if any of you have friends who have not signed up for the WVHS Band next year and are planning to, they need to attend these rehearsals, as well. So, recruit them into our family!

I'm looking forward to another great year! See you on Monday morning.

and this

Video: Montage of jazz band and concert band performances

Both the jazz band and the concert band performed in the Smithwick Theater at Foothill College.

Here are short clips from the jazz band and a longer clip from the Wind Ensemble performance (they played three selections in all).

Video: Color Guard Performance at Heritage Music Festival

The color guard had to perform - to our surprise - in a parking lot behind the theater. The music was played on a boom box located far to the camera's right side and thus is hard to hear.

Video: WV Band Director Falls 165 Feet on School Trip

And flies like an Eagle! Take the plunge and watch the video!

Tell your TXT ur friends to visit wvbands.org to see this video - because its not on YouTube, its exclusively on wvbands.org.

"165 feet high
50 foot free fall
65 miles per hour

This from a Band Director who's afraid of getting up on an 8-foot ladder. I need all the credit I can get because all I got from home was "you are absolutely insane."

Click to watch video and then click on the video player to play. It is on another page because this is online video the way online video ought to be - big!

Video: WVHS band and color guard dancing in San Francisco
