Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival

The West Valley High School Jazz Band will be performing at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival at the University of Idaho. The Jazz Festival runs from February 22nd through the 25th.

The WVHS Jazz Band performs at 1:20 pm on Saturday, February 25th at Moscow High School, Moscow, Idaho.

(Note: When checking the schedules be careful to not confuse WVHS Spokane with WVHS Yakima.)

UPDATE: I am told that the Jazz Band has chosen to not participate this year and has backed out as of Wednesday, February 22nd. They did not feel their program was ready and there was not much value in the trip to Idaho with only enough time to perform and then return. That meant no opportunity to observe other performances too.

All State Bands Update

Via phone, I received an update on the 4 West Valley students who qualified for the All State Bands festival in Yakima, WA. As I understand it:
  • Rachel Cos is 4th of 4 bassoons in ? (not sure of which group)
  • Josh Johnston is 1st of 4 tubas in the Wind Symphony.
  • Gavin Mitchell is 3rd of 15 trumpets in Concert Band
  • Zach Slovarp is 5th of 8 euphoniums in Concert Band.
I am told that the chairs may be assigned rather than based on a try out or challenge test and do not necessarily represent individual ability.

Solo and Ensemble Festival

This weekend is Solo and Ensemble Festival here in Spokane.

Late next week is All-State Band in Yakima, WA. Four West Valley music students were selected to All-State.

Update: I do not have all the names but some students qualified for the All State Solo and Ensemble Festival. Many of the remaining students qualified as "1st Alternate". Great job!
