Update from British Columbia

  • WVHS received the "Outstanding Band Award" of the Festival (and a HUGE trophy)
  • WV also was recognized with an "Outstanding Band Program" award.
  • WV received Gold medal awards for percussion ensemble, color guard and parade band.
  • In the Wind Ensemble category, WV received a Silver medal award.
  • In a judging by university music professors, Eric Heale received the Maestro Award for the instrumental category. Only 2 such awards were given at the Festival.
Before the parade on Saturday, the leader of a Boy Scout troop, with his scouts, watched the band for 20 minutes. He complimented Mr. Loucks, saying that he was using the band as an example of a "highly disciplined" group as a role model for his scouts.

Being from the U.S. at this community festival parade in Vancouver, the WVHS Band and color guard were treated as celebrities with everyone taking pictures of the WV Band and giving them a grand reception.

More info will be available after the trip - they have had a hard time getting Internet connections and have not been able to forward photos. And its expensive to send picture phone photos from Canada!

The band did well today in competition in Vancouver

And that's all I know so far! They are trying to find an Internet connection up where they are staying and hope to send a bigger update and more photos later tonight.

Ingraham HS Marching Band Celebrates 50 years of marching in Victoria, B.C. parade

That's quite something - Ingraham has appeared every year for 50 years in the Victoria Day Parade in Victoria, B.C. parade. West Valley HS has also appeared in this parade in the past.

WV receives "Lilac Gold Standard Award", plus video clips of the parade

You'll be pleased to know that for the 2nd year in a row, the WVHS Marching Band (Including Color Guard, Cheer Team and Dance Team) received the "Lilac Gold Standard" Award which is given to the top high school marching bands in the parade. In order to receive this award, the students must meet the high standards in at least 8 of the 11 categories. This award was only given to a few marching bands this year, as the judging was much tougher. This provides great momentum heading into our competitions in Canada next week. Thanks for your great support of my kids.

Jim Loucks
Director of Bands - West Valley High School

Central Valley did something a bit different. As the last band in the parade, they hung around afterwards in an encore performance near the water feature in Riverfront Park.
