"Salute to America"

On September 21, 2001, over 1,000 high school musicians came together at West Valley High School, Spokane, Washington, to perform as a single band in a grand performance of "America the Beautiful".

The performance was video taped and presented in New York; portions appeared nationwide on ABC's Good Morning America television program.

The following video was somewhat poorly taped using a handheld consumer camcorder. The titles are incorrect in that it says the performance was taped by PBS when in fact, it was taped by a local video production company.

Media Coverage

2006-2007
  • Nov 10th, 2006
The WVHS Marching Band buses were headed over the Snoqualmie Summit pass on Friday, Nov 10th, in the midst of a snow storm. The sports anchor for one of the Yakima TV stations saw the buses stopped at the rest area and ended up doing a story on the WVHS Band traveling over the Cascades to compete in Auburn, WA on Nov 11th. The story ran on the 11 O'clock news in Yakima and Spokane, WA, and possibly elsewhere.

2005-2006
  • May 20th, 2006
The WVHS Marching Band received about 3 minutes of TV coverage on KHQ-6 and KHQ-6.3 HD, versus about 20 to 30 seconds for most other bands in the 2006 Lilac Festival and Armed Forces Day Parade. How come? A vehicle in front the band (and not related to the band) suffered an engine failure just after passing by the broadcast TV section of the parade. The band was "trapped" on TV for about 3 minutes, until the vehicle was pushed off the parade route.

A video clip (from Ed Mitchell) shows the last half of the band's entrapment and other parts of the parade. Video hosted via Video.Google.com. Go to watch the video.

Citadel Broadcasting - KEYF AM 1050 broadcast live the West Valley High School vs North Central High School, State 3A Basketball Tournament from the Tacoma Dome, Tacoma, WA. The game kicked off with a solo trumpet performance of the National Anthem, performed by Gavin Mitchell of West Valley HS Marching Band.

Audio recording used here with permission of Brett Sports & Entertainment. Announcer is Bob Robertson "Voice of the WSU Cougars". Thank you to Brett Sports, Bob Robertson, KEYF AM 1050 and Citadel Broadcasting.

For subscription information see http://www.spokesman-review.com or call 747-4422. The following is quoted from that article:

  • September 25, 2005.
Spokesman-Review: Spokesman Review - WVHS Homecoming Game
"The West Valley Eagle Marching Band comes on the field, escorted by flag girls in purple dress and cone-shaped damsel caps. The marching Eagles are what brought Scott and Cheryl Gade to the game. The band parents sit one row from the top of the grandstands. Many of the parents around them are peering at the oncoming production through the small rangefinders of video cameras, but the Gades are just observing. Their son, Matt Gade, marches in the back of the band procession, shouldering a big bass drum.

The scene unfolding on the field is one both parents recognize.

"I played some football in high school and then I joined the band." Scott Gade says. "We were both in marching bands. A lot of this is the same."

Give Spokane Valley time to mature and outlast its detractors - the city just survived a disincorporation petition - Scott Gade says, and the other cultural events, like symphony performances will materialize.

For now, music played from the 50-yard line will do just fine.

  • September 2, 2005.
KREM-2: The West Valley High School band appeared on air for over one minute on KREM-2 TV News at 11 pm. Their videographer had taped the band performing at a before-school-started football game at West Valley High School.

Awards

The Eagle Marching Band has won many awards for excellence.

Small schools are usually in the 1A and 2A category. Larger schools are in the 3A and 4A categories. In other parts of the country, there is even a 5A category for extremely large schools.

What is the discussion forum?

This is an online meeting place to read messages from others and to post comments of your own. The discussion forums is available to foster discussion and information sharing between all interested parties.

To post a message, you will be required to sign up for a FREE (repeat FREE) forum account. We do not permit anonymous posting of messages as they always leads to a bad apple or two going rotten on the forum. So you do need to sign up for a free user ID to use the forum.

Two tools are used to ensure that the content of this forum remains clean.
1. An automated tool scans and rates all messages for obscenity and profane language.
2. Any registered reader of the forum and click on the "Options" tab next to each message to "Report a violation". This will flag the message and alert the forum moderator to a possible problem that needs to be checked.

The forum moderator can edit messages to remove offensive content, delete the message, and/or ban the user from using the forum again in the future.

The forum is hosted by Delphi Forums service, for free - they display small ads on the web pages and often display an advertisement on first entry to the forum. Click on "Skip Ad" at upper left to bypass the ad page. But heck, its FREE.

Web site history
This web site was created during the summer of 2005 using available free resources (as compared to renting web server space). That's why part of it is hosted on a Comcast Internet account, the weblog/newsletter is hosted on BlogSpot.com and the online discussion forum is hosted by Delphi Forums.

The additional advantage of online, free web services, is that as the parent group will change from year to year, it is relatively easy to shift responsibility for the web site over to new parents as time goes on. We won't have to shift from one borrowed web server to another borrowed web server. Everything can stay put - the only things that will change will be a few email addresses and login user IDs.
